A man walked into a bookstore to return a book he had bought. “It’s a Bible,” he said, handing it to the clerk at the cash register.

“Was it a gift?” asked the clerk. “No, I bought it for myself,” he said, “and I made a mistake.”

“Didn’t you like the translation? Or the format?”

“Oh no,” the man said, “the format was clear and the translation was fine. I made a mistake.”

The clerk said, “Well, I need to write down a reason for the return.”

“In that case,” said the man, “write down that there are Parables in that book that are destroying our religion…..like the “Good Samaritan nonsense.”

“That traveler should have had enough common sense and stayed away from dangerous highways. Catch those robbers who left him half-dead and give them the death penalty.

“The priest and the Levite should be fired for not being at work. The inn keeper should lose his business for ripping people off with his exorbitant rates. And this Good Samaritan guy is a revolting, half-breed pagan who had better stay in Samaria where he belongs if he wants to go on living.”

In today’s world the man has a point in wanting to return the Bible.

Do the words of Jesus or the words of the man returning the Bible sound more familiar to YOU in today’s world? How do the words of Jesus’ Good Samaritan Parable concretely affect YOUR faith life and YOUR attitude?

MORE ON THE GOOD SAMARITAN TOMORROW!!

IT IS BETTER TO WALK WITH GOD THAN TO WALK WITH A CROWD THAT IS GOING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION!
