Every year the Gospel reading on Thanksgiving Day is from Luke 17:11-19. Jesus cures 10 lepers. Only one of them, a Samaritan, returns to thank Jesus for being cured.
Why did only one man cleansed from leprosy return to thank Jesus? Someone has made a list of nine suggested reasons why the nine did not return:
One waited to see if the cure was real.
One waited to see if it would last.
One said he would see Jesus later.
One decided that he had never had leprosy in the first place.
One said he would have gotten well anyway.
One gave the glory to the priests.
One said, “O, well, Jesus didn’t really do anything.”
One said, “Any rabbi could have done it.”
One said, “I was already much improved.”
That’s not surprising, is it? I doubt that more than ten percent of us are ever truly grateful to God. In fact, it often seems that the more we have, the less gratitude we feel. With Thanksgiving Day coming on Thursday, we still have few days to think and to pray about all God has done for us.
Thanks to King Duncan.
Do YOU visit a church or kneel down to thank the Lord when one of YOUR prayers is answered? Of the nine reasons above, which might YOU use for not thanking the Lord?
TODAY I WILL: BE THANKFUL! SEE GOD IN OTHERS! TRUST GOD’S WAYS! HAVE HOPE! GO OUT OF MY WAY TO BLESS SOMEONE!
