When we are children, people ask us, what do we want to do when we grow up? When we are teens, people ask us, what do we want to study when we go to college? When we are getting ready to graduate, people ask us, what do you plan to do now?
These are just some examples, but some form of these questions are always being presented to us by others, by the culture, and even by our own inner dialogue.
What are you going to do with the rest of your life?
Unfortunately, in the current culture, these questions focus on “what” and “do.” We pause too rarely to consider who we are becoming.
You see, all the doing has value to the extent that it helps us become more fully who God created us to be. This is one of life’s most important lessons, and one that most people never learn.
We are not here to do. We are here to be and become. So, what should you do with the rest of your life?
Only those things that help you become. Beyond that, we think that the answer to this question is always changing. It isn’t. The answer to this question is the same at every time in our lives. And it is the same for every person.
Holy Moments. This is the answer to the question about what to do with the rest of your life. Whether you are 12 or 112, you should spend the rest of your life collaborating with God to create Holy Moments.
What is a Holy Moment?
“A Holy Moment is a single moment in which you open yourself to God. You make yourself available to God. You set aside personal preference and self-interest, and for one moment you do what you prayerfully believe God is calling you to do.”
The world is a bit of a mess. How did it get that way? Unholy moments. How can we make the world a better place for our children and grandchildren? Holy Moments.
You know everything you need to know right now to fill the rest of your life with Holy Moments. If you want to change your life, fill your life with Holy Moments. If you want to revitalize a relationship, fill it with Holy Moments. And the only way to change the world, a world we all know is desperately in need of change, is to fill it with Holy Moments.
One moment at a time.
Some moments are holy, some moments are unholy, and you get to decide. You can influence the outcome of most moments in your life. When we collaborate with God, we create Holy Moments. When we collude with our selfishness, we create unholy moments. We have all participated in both. We have seen the marvelous effects of Holy Moments and the devastating effects of unholy moments.
Now, let me ask you: What are you going to do with the rest of your life? More of the same? Continue to distract yourself with meaningless nonsense? Focus on what you can get? Keep dreaming about a change you know you will never make? Or are you finally, once and for all, ready to do something about the nagging dissatisfaction in your soul?
The fourth quarter of life is a series of moments. They can be Holy Moments or unholy moments. You get to decide. You can collaborate with God or try to go it on your own. The choice is yours.
It only takes a handful of Holy Moments to flood your soul with joy. It only takes a handful of Holy Moments to discover a new and exciting vision for the rest of your life.
Fill your fourth quarter with Holy Moments. Nothing else will fill you with such unquenchable satisfaction.
