My mother-in-law said my quilt looks like a thrift store threw up on my bed — and honestly, I’ve never been prouder of anything in my life.

It took me two years to make this thing. Every single square is a different fabric, stitched together from scraps of the life we’ve lived. The orange floral in the corner? My daughter’s first Easter dress. The dark blue paisley? My husband’s shirt from our very first date — the one with the torn pocket he refused to throw away. There’s a piece of my son’s old superhero pajamas, a faded curtain from our first apartment, even a bit of the tablecloth from our wedding reception.

When my mother-in-law came over last week, she took one look at it and said, “It’s very… busy, isn’t it?” You know that tone — the one that means “hideous but I’ll pretend I’m being polite.” She said her quilts are all coordinated and elegant, every piece planned. Mine, apparently, looks chaotic.

She’s right. It is chaotic. Its colors clash on purpose, seams aren’t perfectly straight, memories don’t quite fit together but somehow still belong in the same story. I learned to quilt from midnight YouTube tutorials, pricking my fingers until they bled because I couldn’t figure out how to use a thimble.

Her quilts sit in a linen closet, wrapped neatly in plastic. Mine lives on my bed — covered in dog hair, coffee stains, and the weight of every memory I stitched into it.

It might not match anything in the room. But every night when I pull it over me, it feels like home.

My Commentary:

This quilt is more than a blanket. It is a family history stitched together with love.

To another person, the colors may clash. The seams may wander. The fabrics may seem mismatched. But to the woman who made it, every square tells a story. A daughter’s Easter dress. A husband’s shirt from their first date. A son’s pajamas. A wedding tablecloth. None of those pieces is valuable by itself. Together, they are priceless.

Perhaps God sees our lives much the same way.

We would like life to be perfectly coordinated. We want success without failure, joy without sorrow, love without loss. But that is not how life unfolds. There are bright pieces and dark ones. There are beautiful moments and painful ones. There are mistakes, disappointments, celebrations, births, deaths, beginnings, and endings.

We sometimes look at the pieces and see chaos. God sees the quilt.

Scripture tells us that God can work all things together for good. That does not mean everything that happens is good. It means God is capable of taking even the torn and faded pieces of our lives and weaving them into something meaningful.

And perhaps the most beautiful quilts are not the ones stored perfectly in plastic. They are the ones that have covered children, comforted the sick, warmed cold nights, collected dog hair, absorbed tears, and been worn thin by love.

Our lives will never have perfectly straight seams.
They don’t need to.

Give God the scraps.
He has a remarkable way of stitching together what seems mismatched and making something beautiful.

And when God is finished, we may discover that what looked like a collection of unrelated pieces was, all along, a masterpiece of grace.

Spend a few minutes today thinking about what YOU would stitch into the quilt of your life.
