The food on my table, the bed where I lie
The one special person on whom I rely

The lessons I’ve learned over the years
The happy endings that bring me to tears
The people who love me in spite of myself
The photos of loved ones I keep on the shelf
Music that brings my soul to its knees
To live in a country where I am free
Being alone in my own special place
Having been touched by the power of Grace

Search your heart and you’ll find before long
your gratitude list goes endlessly on
For blessed are those, not who have more
But, those who know what to be grateful for

Karen Michelle Miller

Who are the new people YOU have put on your gratitude list in 2026? How are you able to express your gratitude to these special people?

MORNINGS ARE GIFTS FROM GOD!! GOOD MORNING!!

My Commentary:

This poem reads like a quiet inventory of the soul.

It begins with simple things. A table. A bed. A trusted companion. Nothing flashy. Nothing extravagant. Just daily mercies we often overlook because they are always there. Yet remove any one of them, and we would suddenly understand their value.

Gratitude sharpens vision.

The poet moves from the tangible to the tender — lessons learned through years, tears shed over happy endings, the rare gift of being loved “in spite of myself.” That line may be the most honest of all. To be known and still loved is one of life’s holiest experiences. It reflects the very heart of grace.

There is also gratitude for freedom. For music that stirs the soul. For solitude. For photographs that hold memory still. These are not luxuries of wealth. They are treasures of awareness.

The closing thought carries wisdom: blessed are not those who have more, but those who know what to be grateful for. That echoes the spirit of the Beatitudes in the Gospel of Matthew Chapter 5. Jesus redefined blessing. It was never about accumulation. It was about the posture of the heart.

A grateful heart is not naïve about suffering. It simply refuses to let sorrow blind it to goodness. When we search our hearts honestly, we discover that our gratitude list does, indeed, go on and on.

And the more we name our blessings, the richer we become — no matter how much  sits in our bank account or on our shelf.

With all that is happening in our country, I felt I had to write my new book –

WHAT MAKES AMERICA AMERICA. Too many people have forgotten what America is all about and how we got to today. I want people to start reflecting.
