The Kingdom of God has no flag, no walls, no cages and one official language: mercy.
My Commentary:
“The Kingdom of God has no flag, no walls, no cages and one official language: mercy.”
Those words challenge us because we live in a world defined by boundaries. We have nations, borders, political parties, races, religions, and countless ways of deciding who belongs and who does not.
Jesus envisioned something radically different.
When He spoke about the Kingdom of God, He was not describing another political nation. There would be no flag to salute, no passport to carry, and no border checkpoint determining who could enter. The identifying mark of its citizens would be love.
Jesus kept crossing the boundaries people had constructed. He touched lepers. He ate with sinners. He spoke with Samaritans. He welcomed foreigners. He forgave enemies. Again and again, He moved toward people others pushed away.
That does not mean earthly nations should have no laws or borders. Governments have legitimate responsibilities to maintain order and protect their citizens. But Christians have another citizenship as well. We belong to a Kingdom that transcends every national boundary.
And its official language is MERCY.
Mercy does not ask first, “Do you deserve my compassion?” Mercy asks, “What does love require of me?”
The Good Samaritan did not ask the wounded man’s nationality, religion, politics, or immigration status. He saw suffering and responded.
Our world desperately needs more people who are fluent in the language of God’s Kingdom.
It is spoken whenever we forgive.
Whenever we welcome.
Whenever we feed the hungry.
Whenever we protect human dignity.
Whenever we choose compassion over contempt.
Flags will change. Walls will rise and fall. Political kingdoms will come and go.
But Jesus tells us that one Kingdom will remain.
And at its borders there is a sign:
MERCY SPOKEN HERE.
