The Highest Priority!

Have you ever been in a hurry and buttoned up a long overcoat with lots of buttons and when you were done, found out that the coat was uneven? What went wrong?

I’ll tell you what went wrong. When you don’t get the first button in the right hole, all the rest are out of sequence too, right?! That’s a parable about life.

Jesus said it this way in the Sermon on the Mount: “Seek first God’s kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.” (Matthew 6:33)

If the Lord is not the high priority in your life, then, like the overcoat, so many other things in life will be out of whack as well.

Recently, have YOU found that YOUR life is properly “buttoned up?”

GOD IS ALWAYS WITH YOU….JUST PAY ATTENTION!

My Commentary:

Life can feel like a whirlwind of obligations—family, work, health, finances, and social commitments—each demanding attention. But like the overcoat in the parable, if we don’t start with the right “first button,” everything else gets misaligned.

Jesus’ words from Matthew 6:33 serve as both a correction and a compass: “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”  The message is simple yet profound: when God is not our starting point, priorities slip, stress mounts, and meaning fades.

But when we begin with Him—His love, His will, His presence—everything else can find its rightful place. Like the coat, our lives are designed to “fit” when God is our first concern. It’s not about ignoring responsibilities, but rather reordering them around what matters most.

This doesn’t mean we won’t have challenges, but it means we’ll approach them with spiritual alignment, clarity, and peace. Seeking God’s kingdom first is not just good advice; it’s the foundation for a life that’s properly “buttoned up.”

My Prayer Reflection:

Lord of all order and purpose,
I come to You today recognizing how often I rush into my day trying to fasten all the “buttons” of my life without first anchoring in You. I see now how easily things fall out of place when I start with the wrong priority.

Help me to seek You first—not as an afterthought, but as the guiding force of everything I do. Teach me to align my heart, my choices, and my time with Your will.

When I feel overwhelmed, draw me back to Your presence. When I’m tempted to put other things first, gently remind me that peace and clarity come only when You are at the center. Let my life be a reflection of trust in You—a life where everything finds its place because You are in Your rightful place.

Amen.
