Father Barry Foster, a priest in Dublin, Ireland, parked his car on a rather steep slope close to his church. His little cairn terrier was lying on the rear seat and could not be seen by anyone outside the vehicle.

Father Foster got out of the car and turned to lock the door with his usual parting command to the dog. “Stay!” he ordered loudly, to an apparently empty car. “Stay!”

An elderly man was watching the performance with amused interest. Grinning, he suggested, “Why don’t you just try putting on the emergency brake?”

To the mind of the unbeliever, watching someone pray is the equal of watching someone say “Stay,” to their automobile fully expecting it to obey.

To the unbeliever prayer is an exercise in futility. But to the believer, prayer is the most powerful and the most reliable force in the world today.

My Prayer Reflection: The Power of Prayer:

Lord,
To the world, my prayers may seem foolish—
Like commands to an empty car, like whispers to the wind.

But I know You are listening.
You are not absent, not deaf, not idle.
You are present, attentive, and near.

Just as the priest spoke to his unseen companion,
So I speak to You, unseen yet real, hidden yet close.

Though others may laugh or question,
I believe that prayer is not wishful thinking—
It is communion with the living God.

Prayer is not my last resort; it is my first strength.
Not a desperate shout into silence,
But a faithful echo of Your own voice within me.

It does not always change the world around me—
But it always changes the world within me.

So even when my prayer feels small or strange,
I will still say, “Stay,”
I will still say, “Come,”
I will still say, “Thank You.”
Because I know You hear.

Teach me to pray with faith, not for show,
And to live with trust, not for applause.
Let my life be a quiet witness
That prayer moves mountains—
Not because I am strong,
But because You are.
Amen.
