I found a wallet in the shopping cart at Aldi today. It was worn leather. Inside: $400 cash. No credit cards. Just a driver’s license and a folded photo of a baby.
The address on the license was in the rough part of town. I drove there. The house was run-down. A young guy opened the door, looking defensive.
“I found this,” I said, handing it over. He checked the cash. He looked at me, stunned. “The rent,” he choked out. “I took it out in cash because the landlord doesn’t take checks. I thought we were gonna be evicted.”
He tried to hand me a $20. “For gas,” he said. I pushed it back. “Buy the baby some diapers.”
I walked to my car. As I pulled away, I saw him sit on his front steps and put his head in his hands, shoulders shaking. Integrity is doing the right thing when no one is watching. But sometimes, it’s nice that someone is watching.
My Commentary:
This story is a beautiful reminder that integrity is revealed not in life’s big moments, but in its ordinary ones.
A wallet left in a shopping cart presented a choice. No one was watching. No cameras. No witnesses. The finder could have walked away with $400 and no one would likely have known. But integrity is doing what is right simply because it is right.
When the wallet was returned, another story unfolded. The money was not extra spending cash. It was rent. It represented security for a young family and a roof over the head of a little child. A simple act of honesty spared them the fear of eviction and restored hope to a home that had very little.
Integrity is one of the foundations of a faithful life. Jesus taught that “whoever is faithful in little things will also be faithful in great things.” Character is not built in dramatic moments. It is built one honest decision at a time.
The finder also refused the reward. “Buy the baby some diapers,” he said. That response transformed honesty into compassion. He not only returned what belonged to another person, but he recognized the greater need before him.
The final sentence is especially profound: “Integrity is doing the right thing when no one is watching. But sometimes, it’s nice that someone is watching.”
As Christians, we believe Someone is always watching — not as a harsh judge waiting for us to fail, but as a loving Father who delights whenever His children choose goodness over selfishness, honesty over temptation, and mercy over gain.
In a world where integrity can sometimes seem old-fashioned, stories like this remind us that it still changes lives. One honest decision preserved a family’s home, protected a father’s dignity, and provided for a baby.
Integrity may not always make headlines. Lately, lying and deception have been making the headlines in Washington, DC. But in the eyes of God, integrity is one of the greatest treasures a person can possess.
Please spend some time reflecting on integrity. A person or a country without integrity is doomed to eventually fail. Look for an opportunity to talk about integrity with a teenager or a young adult in your life.

For most of our lives we have looked up to people with integrity. Today, it is hard to find someone in public life with integrity. Voting often means figuring out the lesser of two evils. This is why I wrote the book — WHAT MAKES AMERICA AMERICA.
