A young man, who was obviously worried, stepped into an elevator to go to the second floor of a hospital where his father was in the intensive-care unit.

Although the button labeled “2” was already lighted, he pushed it again and again. A doctor standing behind him said, “Pushing the button someone has already pushed is like reminding God you’re still there when he hasn’t answered your prayer immediately.”

As the man thought of his father in intensive care, it was comforting to know that God does encourage believers to continue to pray the same prayers until he answers.

My Commentary:

The anxious young man’s repeated pressing of the elevator button captures a feeling most of us have known — that desperate need to do something when our prayers seem unanswered.

The doctor’s gentle observation transforms a nervous gesture into a powerful spiritual truth: persistence in prayer is not impatience. It is faith in motion. When we “push the button again,” we are not doubting God’s awareness but expressing our continued hope, our refusal to give up.

Just as Jesus encouraged His disciples to “pray always and not lose heart” (Luke 18:1), our repeated prayers remind us — not God  — that we still trust Him.

The light on the elevator button was already on. The answer was already in process. The young man’s comfort came in realizing that God had heard him the first time, yet invites him to keep talking, keep believing, and keep hoping.

When was the last time that YOU pushed the button again in an elevator? Do YOU take the time to remind God you’re still there when God doesn’t  answer YOUR prayer immediately.”
