If Jesus Was the Boss!

Some years ago Charles Sheldon wrote a book titled, In His Steps. In that book he told about the revolution which occurred in the lives of a church and a congregation when the people decide to put every moral issue to the test of one question—“What would Jesus do?”.

Perhaps his book was a bit naive. We are not always sure of what Jesus would do in every situation. Many of the moral issues which we must face in the Twenty-First Century were never part of his First-Century world.

Perhaps a better form of the question is: “Given what I know of the mind and spirit of Jesus Christ, what would Christ have me do?”

I am confident that a revolution would follow if we were to ever really take that question seriously.

But that is what we mean when we say that “Jesus Christ is Lord.” “Lord,” in the vernacular, means “BOSS.” What if Jesus Christ really was the BOSS around here today?

Thanks to Donald B. Strobe for sharing.

What would YOUR life be like today if YOU saw Jesus as the BOSS of YOUR life and YOU had to answer to him?

WE CAN MAKE OUR PLANS, BUT THE LORD DETERMINES OUR STEPS!

Every day I now provide a Commentary and a Prayer Reflection of the Daily Treat on my Podcast. I invite you to please listen to the above Podcast. Here is the text of what you would be missing  today —

My Commentary: “If Jesus Was the Boss”

The idea of Jesus as “the Boss” may sound odd at first—it’s a phrase more at home in the workplace than in the pews. But consider its weight: if Jesus were truly in charge of our daily decisions, our conversations, our schedules, our moral compass—how different might our lives look?

Charles Sheldon’s classic challenge—“What would Jesus do?”—sparked a movement because it invites us to filter every action through the lens of Christ. And though we can’t always apply that question literally, we can ask with humility: “What would Christ have me do, given what I know of His spirit?”

That’s the heart of discipleship. Not simply believing in Jesus, but placing our whole life under His direction. If Jesus were our boss—not just in church, but at the office, in the kitchen, at the ballot box, and in the car—would we speak more gently? Would we lead more humbly? Would we forgive more quickly?

Saying “Jesus is Lord” must mean more than reciting a creed. It means letting Jesus set the tone, the priorities, the direction—being accountable to Him in every area. And it means trusting that His way, though not always easy, is always holy and whole.

When Jesus is the Boss, grace becomes our policy, truth becomes our practice, and love becomes our mission.

My Prayer Reflection:

Lord Jesus,
You are not just a teacher I admire,
But the Lord I follow.

Not just my Savior, but my Boss—my guide, my authority, my center.

Too often, I make decisions without You.
I run ahead, act on impulse, and then ask You to bless the mess.

Help me to reverse that.
Help me to begin with You.

Let me pause before I speak,
Reflect before I act,
And ask with sincerity:
“What would You have me do, Lord?”

Give me a heart that welcomes Your correction.
Give me the courage to follow You when it’s hard.
And give me the joy of knowing
That when You lead, I walk in light and truth.

Be the Boss of my life, Jesus—
In my thoughts, my words, my work, and my love.
Not just on Sundays, but in every moment.
Amen.
