The following list must be carefully followed if you wish to be miserable:

  • Think about yourself.
  • Talk about yourself.
  • Use “I” as often as possible.
  • Mirror yourself continually in the opinion of others.
  • Listen greedily to what people say about you.
  • Expect to be appreciated.
  • Be suspicious.
  • Be jealous and envious.
  • Be sensitive to slights.
  • Never forgive a criticism.
  • Trust nobody but yourself.
  • Insist on consideration and respect.
  • Demand agreement with your own views on everything.
  • Sulk if people are not grateful to you for favors shown them.
  • Never forget a service you have rendered.
  • Shirk your duties if you can.
  • Do as little as possible for others.

How many of the above have helped to make YOU miserable?

GOD WORKS THROUGH A RESTED MIND AND AN OPENED HEART!

My Commentary:

This list reads almost like a satire, yet it reveals a profound spiritual truth: misery often grows not from what happens to us, but from how tightly we cling to ourselves. A life centered entirely on “I” becomes a very small world, and small worlds suffocate the human spirit.

When we constantly measure our worth by recognition, agreement, or appreciation, we surrender our peace to the changing opinions of others. Suspicion replaces trust. Envy steals gratitude. Sensitivity to every slight turns ordinary life into a battlefield of wounded pride. The heart becomes crowded with grievances and empty of joy.

Please take note when a public figure acts this way.

Jesus taught the opposite path. He showed that fulfillment is found not in self-absorption but in self-gift. Those who forget themselves in service discover freedom. Those who forgive criticism grow stronger. Those who give without keeping score experience a deeper happiness than praise can ever provide.

Ironically, the surest way to be miserable is to demand happiness for oneself. Joy arrives instead as a by-product of generosity, humility, and love. When we shift our focus from being noticed to noticing others, from being served to serving, life expands. The prison of self opens, and the soul begins to breathe again.

In the end, happiness is less about protecting our ego and more about releasing it  —  trusting that a life lived for others is never a life diminished, but a life made whole.
