There was once a nurse in a small town who put in long hours at the hospital for years. The day arrived for her to die.
God sent his angel to the nurse but to the angel’s surprise, the nurse, a very religious, faith-filled woman, refused to go. She pleaded with the angel that she was the most experienced nurse at the hospital. She was much needed. The nurse did not want to appear to be ungrateful and was looking forward to having a place in God’s kingdom, but could she put it off for a while?
The angel went and made the nurse’s case before God. And God agreed.
Sometime later, the angel returned to bring the nurse to heaven. But again she requested that her return to God be delayed. “A neighbor of mine is seriously ill and in the hospital. I am caring for her. Please tell God I am grateful for his blessings to me. But could you come for me later?” And the angel returned to heaven.
Well, it got to be a pattern. Every time the angel would come to bring the faithful nurse to heaven, the nurse would shake her head and explain to the angel that she was still needed by someone on earth.
Finally, one day, the nurse called out to heaven in her prayers. Immediately the angel appeared. “If you still want to take me home, I’m ready to live forever in God’s kingdom.”
The angel laughed and looked at the nurse with delight and surprise. “Where do you think you have been all these years?”
If the angel appeared to YOU to say YOU were about to die, would YOU ask the angel for a delay? Would YOUR reasons for the delay be similar to the nurse’s? Do YOU feel YOU are living in God’s kingdom today?
