A young girl listens to music on her phone.

One family decided to let their three-year-old daughter record the message for callers on their smart phone.

The rehearsals went smoothly: “Mommy and Daddy can’t come to the phone right now. If you’ll leave your name, phone number, and a brief message, they’ll get back to you as soon as possible.”

Then came the test. The father pressed the record button on the smart phone and their daughter said sweetly, “Mommy and Daddy can’t come to the phone right now. If you’ll leave your name, phone number, and a brief message, they’ll get back to you as soon as Jesus comes.”

This three-year-old girl had already figured out the message of Christmas: Jesus was coming into their lives at Christmas!

My Commentary:

Sometimes the deepest truths don’t come from theologians, scholars, or polished preachers–they come from the small voices we least expect. Children have a way of saying what adults forget. They speak without editing, without hesitation, and without fear of sounding naive. And in this case, a three-year-old delivered a sermon better than most Sunday homilies.

Her innocent mistake was not really a mistake at all. It was revelation.

She believed that Christmas wasn’t just a holiday–it was a promise. Jesus comes– not just once in Bethlehem long ago, but again and again, into the middle of our everyday lives. Into our kitchens. Into our waiting. Into our interruptions. Even into our voicemail messages.

Think of the messages YOU leave on someone’s smart phone. Can YOU also leave them a comment that will make them feel good, and uplifted?
