Please enjoy my Memorial Day poem. My Podcast above has the prose version along with a Commentary and a Prayer Reflection. I think you will enjoy listening to it.
MEMORIAL DAY
It was a spring morn in eighteen sixty-six,
After the Civil War’s devastating tricks.
Southerners marched, a sight profound,
To the cemetery, to solemn ground.
They decorated graves with care,
For both Union and Confederate there.
Mothers, daughters, widows too,
Burying hatred, and starting anew.
The healing time at last had come,
With flowers bright, their hearts not numb.
It marked the first Memorial Day,
In unity, they found the way.
Why is Memorial Day in May?
Because flowers bloom, a bright display.
With blooms to decorate each grave,
A gesture pure, to honor the brave.
So every year, when May is here,
We remember those we hold so dear.
With blooming flowers, graves adorned,
Their sacrifice, is forever mourned.

In many ways our divided nation is fighting a raging Civil War right now. In our history we have never been as torn apart as we are right now.
What we are all witnessing is much more than differences of opinion. We are seeing hatred of one another – in families, in friendships, in communities and in our country. Where and when will all of this end? As usually happens, history repeats itself. So let’s look 40 years down the road —
It is a spring morning in 2066, just after the Great American Civil War ended that had devastated all 50 states. A group of Americans did something quite extraordinary early that morning. They marched down the street of what was left of America to a cemetery.
There they knelt and decorated the graves of ALL WHO HAD FALLEN, those on the Left, those on the Right and those in the Middle THEY BURIED THEIR HATRED THAT MEMORIAL DAY!
This is how ALL WARS END, EVEN CIVIL WARS. Memorial Day, 2025 would be a great day for all of us to wake up and realize how today’s Civil War and all of our conflicts will someday end.
While YOU still have precious time left, rather than plant a flower at a cemetery today, go and GIVE a flower to someone today whose political views YOU cannot stand and whose views drive YOU crazy. It is more than time to bury YOUR hatred.
YOU WEREN’T PUT ON EARTH TO BE REMEMBERED. YOU WERE PUT ON EARTH TO BE RE-MEMBERED IN HEAVEN!
